Policy Pointers
Patron Policy for Young Children
Adult caregivers who bring minor children to the library or allow them to come to the library are solely responsible for the child’s care and safety. Out of concern for the children using the library, the library board has implemented the following rules:
** Children under 6 must have a parent or adult caregiver with them at all times.
** Children age 6 to 10 may use the library unattended, as long as they are engaged in activities associated with the use of a public library. Adults are encouraged to leave them no longer than one hour.
The library does not take the place of a parent, nor assume responsibility for unattended children. If necessary, a staff member will contact the Police Department to report cases of unattended children.
Public Phone Policy
The phone available for public use at the Kendallville Public Library is located at the Teen Reference Desk. This phone is to be used for local calls only in an emergency or by children under 16 who need to call home. Before making your call, please request permission from the staff at the Teen Reference Desk.
7-Day Grace Period
The library has a 7-day grace period for fines on most overdue library materials. If you return most items within seven days after their due date, you will not be charged fines. However, fines will start to accrue from the first day past the due date. This means that patrons returning materials on the eighth day after the due date will be charged fines of 80˘ per item. Fines will continue to add up each day at a rate of 10˘ per day per item until the items are returned or until the fines reach $5.00 per item. Some items are excluded from the grace period; most notably, 7-day books from the Best Seller Cart which have no grace period on fines and accrue fines of $1 per day.
